Was media framing in Iran associated with demobilization in the 2022 Women, Life, Freedom protests?
May 12, 2026 - IPEK Center
IPEK Center will host an online research talk on media framing and identity-based demobilization in Iran. The talk presents findings from our study of protest-related coverage during the 2022 Women, Life, Freedom protests, with attention to how participation was represented across different identity communities and how uneven recognition of media was associated with demobilization and withdrawal from protest.
We examined 2349 articles published between September 2022 and April 2023 by five major diaspora outlets of BBC Persian, Deutsche Welle Persian, Iran International, Radio Farda, and Voice of America Farsi. The event will discuss how media coverage and framing can be studied in relation to protest participation under authoritarian rule. The focus is on what media coverage makes visible and why these patterns matter for understanding identity-based demobilization.
Note: The language of the event is Azerbaijani.
The event will take place online via Zoom.
